A Family Yard Sale That Grew Into a Movement for Good

It all started in 2006 with a simple idea: host a family yard sale and donate 100% of the proceeds to local, vetted nonprofits in the Washington, DC area. These grassroots fundraisers supported organizations doing vital work to strengthen our community.

As the years went on, our yard sale grew—thanks to generous donations from friends, neighbors, and the wider community. With more items came more impact, and soon the question arose: “What if we had even more space? How much more could we raise?”

In 2018, inspired by this idea (and encouraged by our daughters), we secured a 6,000 square foot space—and Goods for Good (G4G) was born.

Scaling Up the Good

Before the pandemic, G4G hosted two Mega Rummage Sales that:

  • Raised over $32,000 for the DC Diaper Bank and Playtime Project
Collected 7,000+ donated items from over 200 families
75% were sold to raise funds
25% were donated directly to local nonprofits helping neighbors in need
Diverted 100% of donations from landfills, ensuring items were reused and repurposed
Engaged over 40 volunteers, running the entire operation with heart and teamwork

Pivoting With Purpose

When COVID-19 hit in spring 2020, gathering for a large sale was no longer safe. So, we pivoted.

In response to the growing needs of those facing the greatest hardships, G4G shifted its focus to mobilizing volunteers in support of DC’s most vulnerable individuals, families, and the nonprofits providing them with critical services—such as housing, education, food, and healthcare.

Today, Goods for Good partners continues that work, partnering with 50 local nonprofits across the DMV region. We connect volunteers of all ages—students, families, neighbors—with meaningful service opportunities that support food security, shelter and housing, education access, employment readiness, health and hygiene support and basic essentials.

Whether it’s delivering donations, organizing supply drives, or lending a hand where it’s needed most—our mission remains the same:

To strengthen the community through collective acts of kindness.
